Visualizing a protein quake with time-resolved X-ray scattering at a free-electron laser

We describe a method to measure ultrafast protein structural changes using time-resolved wide-angle X-ray scattering at an X-ray free-electron laser. We demonstrated this approach using multiphoton excitation of the Blastochloris viridis photosynthetic reaction center, observing an ultrafast global conformational change that arises within picoseconds and precedes the propagation of heat through the protein. This provides direct structural evidence for a 'protein quake': the hypothesis that proteins rapidly dissipate energy through quake-like structural motions. peerReviewed

Determination of the oxygen transmissibility and permeability of hydrogel contact lenses

To test the validity of the method of stacked hydrogel contact lenses to obtain the oxygen permeability and transmissibility coefficients of the lenses, the coefficients of one low hydration (38% water) and two high hydration (55 and 58% water) hydrogel contact lenses stacked one to five on an oxygen electrode were deter- mined. From the oxygen diffusion through the lenses, the current intensity in the stationary state was determined, and from this the "instrument" the oxygen transmis- sibility was obtained. Using synchrotrons and XFELs for time-resolved X-ray crystallography and solution scattering experiments on biomolecules

International audience; Time-resolved structural information is key to understand the mechanism of biological processes, such as catalysis and signalling. Recent developments in X-ray sources as well as data collection and analysis methods are making routine time-resolved X-ray crystallography and solution scattering experiments a real possibility for structural biologists. Here we review the information that can be obtained from these techniques and discuss the considerations that must be taken into account when designing a time-resolved experiment.

Vibrations of a continuous web on elastic supports

We consider an infinite, homogenous linearly elastic beam resting on a system of linearly elastic supports, as an idealized model for a paper web in the middle of a cylinder-based dryer section. We obtain closed-form analytical expressions for the eigenfrequencies and the eigenmodes. The frequencies increase as the support rigidity is increased. Each frequency is bounded from above by the solution with absolutely rigid supports, and from below by the solution in the limit of vanishing support rigidity. Thus in a real system, the natural frequencies will be lower than predicted by commonly used models with rigid supports. peerReviewed

Acute effects of shock-type vibration transmitted to the hand-arm system.

The aim of the project was to find out whether shock-type vibration of hand-tools compared to non-impulsive vibration has stronger acute effects on the hand-arm system and therefore needs a stricter evaluation from the occupational health point of view in comparison with the requirements of the Draft International Standard ISO-DIS 5349. Under laboratory conditions, subjects were exposed to simulated vibration of hand-tools (grinder, chain saw, hammer-drill, pneumatic hammer, rivet hammer and nailer). An Innovative Structural Dynamic Identification Procedure Combining Time Domain OMA Technique and GA

In this paper an innovative and simple Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) method for structural dynamic identification is proposed. It combines the recently introduced Time Domain–Analytical Signal Method (TD–ASM) with the Genetic Algorithm (GA). Specifically, TD–ASM is firstly employed to estimate a subspace of candidate modal parameters, and then the GA is used to identify the structural parameters minimizing the fitness value returned by an appropriately introduced objective function. Variable Friction Dampers (VFD) for a modulated mitigation of the seismic response of framed structures: Characteristics and design criteria

In this paper a new approach for the energy dissipation is discussed based on the use of Variable Friction Dampers (VFDs). The VFD device is borrowed from braking systems mechanical engineering, able to modulate its capability of dissipation, providing a constant pure friction force coupled with an additional (variable) damping force with the increasing of the displacement.
